About
The Milwaukee Safe Streets Initiative is a broad-based community effort that is focused on reducing gang- and drug-related violence in targeted neighborhoods. Coordinated by the United States Attorney’s Office, Safe Streets brings together the entire community (law enforcement, government agencies, faith groups, social service agencies, and businesses) to offer gang and drug offenders a choice. For offenders willing to change their behavior, Safe Streets partners offer alternatives to incarceration. Partners coordinate an array of opportunities for building educational, life, and employment skills for those offenders committed to a transition into full membership in our community. For offenders who are not committed to change, Safe Streets partners provide swift and certain prosecution and incarceration. Safe Streets is a new way of doing business. While the Safe Streets Initiative is currently targeted on Milwaukee Police Districts 2 and 5, the effort is readily scalable to a citywide effort.
The three major components of the Safe Streets Initiative include Community Coordination, Reentry, and Law Enforcement. Each group consists of a variety of agencies and people who are working together to reduce violence in our city through targeted enforcement, resource coordination, strategic planning and community involvement.
